How to calculate wrench time
Wrench time equals hands-on-the-job hours divided by total paid hours for the same period. "Hands-on-the-job" typically starts when the technician logs in progress on a work order at the site and ends at job completion — travel to and from the site, staging at the shop, and admin time between jobs are excluded from the numerator but included in the denominator.
Why wrench time matters for commercial contractors
Labor is the largest cost line for most commercial and mechanical service contractors, and wrench time is the cleanest measure of how much of that cost is actually converting into billable repair work.
